Five Creative Ways To Repurpose Your Old Garage Doors

Construction & Contractors Blog

Have you looked at your aging garage doors lately and vowed to replace them? Once you have your doors replaced all you have to do is trash the old ones. Or, maybe you have an eclectic eye, and with your creative juices flowing, thought that repurposing those doors would be a fun little project while also adding a uniquely rustic element to your household.

Either way, discarding those timeless relics would be quite the shame, especially when there are so many creative ways to incorporate them into your yard or house. Here are a few clever ideas you might want to consider when deciding on how you want to salvage those old garage doors once your new ones are installed.

Bench for the Yard

You look around your yard- the fire pit, kid's swing-set, lovely garden- and wish you had a place to relax and enjoy the beauty of your properties surroundings. Or, maybe you would like a place just to sit and watch your neighborhood come to life in the tepid summer evenings.

Well, a slender garage door or panel could be a great piece to build a bench around. And, it wouldn't take much effort on your part. Two doors would be ideal, one for the seat and the other for the back. Then, all you would have to do is fasten three supports to the bottom- one on each end and one in the middle- and then bolt arm rests on each side. When it's all said and finished, you'd have a sturdy, yet unique looking bench that would have every visiting neighbor, friend, and relative asking how you came up with such a great idea.

Room Divider

A room divider is such a simple yet imaginative way to make use of old, unused garage doors. The beauty lies in the versatility, as there are so many places throughout a house, or even a yard, where a well-placed divider could be used.

By attaching multiple doors together by hinges, you could build a divider for your bedroom. This could be used for privacy while changing clothes or maybe just to separate areas of the room.

Or, imagine having a large one-piece garage door dividing a living room from an entertainment area. It would be must more cost-friendly than building an entire wall, while also giving the added advantage of being easily removed at a later time.

Outside Shower

If you live on or near a beach, or anywhere else where a quick cleaning before entering the house is a desired option, then repurposing your garage doors to build an outside shower is a fantastic idea. Whether you want it completely partially enclosed, affixing three or four doors in a closed fashion would be a rather easy undertaking. Not only that, but it would bring a unique outside element to a house that is often overlooked.

Garden Bed

How many people have seen garden beds surrounded by wooden frames, usually two-by-fours? Boring. Now, who's seen a garden bed stylishly marked and enclosed by rustic garage doors?

The garage doors will capture the viewer's eye as much as the beautiful plants they are containing. They will enhance a part of the yard that is often meticulously manicured in an effort to bring about a sense of beauty and serenity. The best part is the ease with which you could create the structure. Digging shallow trenches, placing the doors sideways in the trenches, and then filling the excess space back with dirt and you have a gorgeous looking staple to your yard.

Headboard and Footboard

There are plenty of different designs for headboards and footboards, but there's something about a rustic garage door that fits just right at the head and foot of a bed. They would add a country charm that's tough to find in stores, especially for a reasonable price.

The best part is it doesn't matter what the color scheme of your room is because the garage doors can be painted to match any design. Again, the versatility that repurposing an old garage door in this fashion allows the beholder to be as creative as they wish without requiring a ton of effort.

There is a bevy of ways that a repurposed garage door can be put to good use. Look around your household, search areas of your yard, and think outside the box before tossing those charming doors in the trash. You'd be surprised how many places around your house a salvaged garage door could add that simple touch that would tie everything together.
